Transforming lives with Good News in the Nation’s Capital

Covering the Capital: Religious Freedom

Sep 9, 2025

Yesterday was a phenomenal day as we had the privilege of attending the Religious Liberty Commission hearing at the Museum of the Bible and seeing President Trump speak on this issue. Religious freedom is one of the pillars of our ministry at Faith & Liberty, so to have a U.S. president publicly uphold this standard was not only welcome but a real celebration of faith for our nation.

As you know, we cannot stand up for religious freedom in our country, connect with members of Congress — or engage in any other ministry activity — without your support! Please prayerfully consider giving for the first time or continuing to give to help us fulfill our unique and vital mission in the nation’s capital.

As you may know, Faith & Liberty's chairman, Mat Staver, is also the founder and president of Liberty Counsel, and a Liberty Counsel client, Justin Aguilar, also presented at yesterday's hearing.

A North Carolina high school valedictorian, Justin came close to being censored for his graduation speech. He testified that he received his proposed graduation speech back with “Jesus Christ crossed out completely.” Then he consulted with Liberty Counsel about his First Amendment rights. His message yesterday was that school districts nationwide do not need to be afraid of religious speech.

Faith & Liberty’s Senior Vice President Peggy Nienaber had the opportunity to pray with Valerie Cleveringa, the youngest person to testify at the hearing. Valerie was asked to speak because she and her brother were told they could not perform Christian songs at a school talent show.

Justin and Valerie stood up for their religious freedom rights. We must support America’s youth and their stand for the founding principles and the future of our nation.

This past weekend our Ministry Center was filled with young people! About 40 new interns serving on the Hill dropped by. It seems there are more interns than ever and also more who are interested in being part of a church. We thank the Lord for what He is doing in the lives of young adults on Capitol Hill and across the nation!

  • There was a pop-up ministry opportunity at our Ministry Center last weekend with around 40 new interns learning about Faith & Liberty and gathering information on local churches. What a wonderful last-minute gathering!

COMING SOON
  • Our Ministry Center will be a house of prayer this weekend as we have 24-hour prayer starting at 6 p.m. Friday.

  • There will also be a Prayer Night on Capitol Hill with congressional staffers. Kings Church DC has led prayer this week, and Peggy has been included to pray for Washington, D.C.

  • This month, we will host ACSI students and parents, share the ministry of Faith & Liberty with the Christian school students as well as give them a tour of our Ministry Center and some areas of Capitol Hill. They will be here in Washington on an Association of Christian Schools International trip.

  • Peggy Nienaber will attend the Executive Values Action Team Summit with Speaker Mike Johnson and House Values Action Team Chairman Robert Aderholt this week, as well as the reception following. We'll be hearing from the administration leaders and House leadership on a range of topics. Faith & Liberty will also attend the Senate Executive Values Action Team Summit the following day.

  • Peggy will attend the 115 Forum pro-life meeting at the Museum of the Bible in mid-September.

  • This month we will also participate in a Capitol Hill Ministries luncheon to learn about what other ministries have planned for this fall season.

  • Faith & Liberty will host a Supreme Court prayer training session on October 5. We will engage in prayer and help trainees understand how to pray in the Supreme Court setting and in light of the rules of the High Court.

  • Our team is planning the She Leads America Summit for October 8-11. We will be sponsoring a Congressional Prayer Breakfast for congressional women and will host a Defending the Dignity of Women panel with members of Congress and women who have had challenges in their lives. The group will be praying with women members of Congress and holding briefings at the White House. Also, Rev. Greg Cox will be meeting with the men who support what the women are doing through She Leads America.

  • In mid-October, Faith & Liberty will host another 24-hour Prayer Night. We’ll be praying for our country, the congressional staffers working on Capitol Hill, and the nations.
