Transforming lives with Good News in the Nation’s Capital

The Faith & Liberty Monday Report

Mar 3, 2025

This week on Capitol Hill, special services will be held for Ash Wednesday, the start of the Lenten season. As a 40-day period of preparation for Easter, Lent comes from the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness before starting His ministry.

On Ash Wednesday, Catholics and some Protestants will wear the sign of the cross in dust on their foreheads, remembering, as God told Adam and Eve in the garden, “you are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Gen. 3:19b).

Anytime we remember that God is our Creator and we are but human is powerful. Spiritual reflection, self-denial, humility — truly these are traits and practices we all could use in our walk with the Lord.

We pray for the president, members of Congress, and key leaders, that their hearts will be humble and that they will acknowledge the Lord God in all their ways as they represent the American people.

Also, tomorrow night President Trump addresses a joint session of Congress from the House Chamber of the Capitol building. We pray for safety and security during this time.

On a lighter note, small Jesus figurines have been showing up in different places on Capitol Hill. Jesus is being talked about on the Hill!

Thank you for praying for our leaders and also for Faith & Liberty as we minister on Capitol Hill!

MINISTRY RECAP
  • Faith & Liberty’s senior pastor, Rev. Greg Cox, and his wife, Bonnie, represented Faith & Liberty at last week’s National Religious Broadcasters convention in Grapevine, Texas.

  • Peggy attended a Leadership Meeting with time for prayer with members of Congress.
  • Peggy attended a briefing with Senator Mike Lee and Rep. Mary Miller to discuss online safety for children and age verification technology.
  • Peggy participated in a meet-and-greet with new members of Congress on Capitol Hill. This provided an opportunity for her to invite members of Congress and staff to our Bible studies.
  • Faith & Liberty‘s ministry team participated in a photo shoot at the Supreme Court last week. This photo features John Stemberger of Liberty Counsel Action, Mat Staver of Liberty Counsel, and Jonathan Alexandre of both ministries.
  • These Jesus figurines have begun showing up in various places on Capitol Hill, even prompting a “Jesus on the Hill” mention in Speaker Johnson’s report!

COMING SOON
  • Peggy Nienaber will be participating in Ash Wednesday services on Capitol Hill this week.
  • We are planning for the U.S. Capitol Police Officer of the Year Recognition in March.
  • Peggy participate in prayer with several groups prior to President Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress, which is similar to a State of the Union address.
  • Faith & Liberty is also planning to participate in the U.S. House Chaplain’s Ministry Fair on April 2. This is the same day an abortion case (Medina vs. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic) comes before the Supreme Court, so protests are expected.
  • We are sending invitations and setting up reservations for our Congressional Bible Reading in April.
  • Patty Bills will be hosting a luncheon with the SUMC Sewing Circle to follow up on December’s Live Nativity event and the use of the new costumes.
