Transforming lives with Good News in the Nation’s Capital

The Faith & Liberty Monday Report

Apr 15, 2024

April 15 is Tax Day, so hopefully all of yours and ours are done and submitted! It’s also crunch time for us here at Faith & Liberty as our event schedule is quite full this week.

We are thankful to have bipartisan participation for our Congressional Bible Reading on Wednesday. House Chaplain Margaret Kibben has graciously granted us use of her office space, and members of Congress have signed up to read God’s Word aloud.

That is not the only time we’ll be reading God's Word publicly this week. We are also inviting volunteers to participate for 90 hours of Bible reading for the U.S. Capitol Bible Reading Marathon starting Saturday (Call Patty Bills if you are interested in participating — see number below).

We have great examples in the Scriptures of God’s Word being read aloud before the nation of Israel. In Nehemiah 8, we see that Ezra the priest gathered men, women, and children — those who were old enough to understand — to hear the reading of the Book of the Law. Although he — just one man — read from early morning until midday, which is quite the feat! — verse 3 tells us that “the ears of all the people were attentive” to the Word. All the people, even the children, listened intently! All the people respected the Word of God and knew it held the words of life! They “gathered as one man” in unity (v. 1), they stood out of respect when the Book of the Law was opened (v. 5), they listened as it was clearly read and then stayed in place as the Levites taught them so they would understand the sense of God’s laws (vv. 7-8). They also responded as Ezra blessed God. “And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God, and all the people answered, 'Amen, Amen,' lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground” (v. 6).

Wouldn’t it be amazing if we, as a nation, held our God and His Word in such regard? Will you pray with us that due respect would be given to the Word of God this week as we read publicly twice on Capitol Hill? May all who enter the Capitol this week bless our God as “the great God”!

MONDAY RECAP
  • Faith & Liberty co-hosted a women’s fellowship and activity event, “Paint Your Heart Out,” on Saturday. This arts & craft night with interns and staffers turned into a night of getting to know these young adults and praying together. Many of them were meeting for the first time, so it was a great time of engagement!

  • At the “Call to the Capitols” event Saturday afternoon, women gathered to pray, take communion, and stand for truth at the U.S. Capitol. Peggy Nienaber was one of the key prayer leaders for this event. Another event is planned for October.

  • This past week, Peggy met with several groups, from supporters of the ministry to Aglow International groups from several states.

COMING SOON

  • Everything is pretty well set for our Congressional Bible Reading at the House Chaplain’s office this Wednesday, April 17. We have members of Congress from both parties signed up to read from the Scriptures in the U.S. Capitol.

  • This Wednesday is also Rock Wednesday for the congressional staffers, a time of prayer and reflection!

  • The U.S. Capitol Bible Reading Marathon will start this Saturday, April 20, at 2 p.m., and continue for 90 hours. If you would like to read the Bible during this marathon, please contact our office and ask for Patty Bills for available times.

  • On April 23-24, a prayer vigil (Tuesday, 7 p.m.) and rally (Wednesday) will be held regarding the Supreme Court case Idaho v. United States, a case regarding prohibiting abortions unless necessary to save the life of the mother.

  • The annual Rooftop Prayer event will be held the morning of April 30. We are thankful to host this event in the U.S. Capitol!

  • Two new Bible studies start soon, one this Thursday evening and the other next Friday morning.

PRAYER

Pray for the state of our nation and for the key leaders of our country, that they would seek wisdom from the Lord and humbly follow Him. Pray for Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and for his leadership team.

Pray for favorable pro-life decisions to come from the abortion cases on the Supreme Court docket, including the abortion pill case (already heard) and the Idaho case (to be heard April 24).

Pray for any needed last-minute arrangements to fall into place for the two Bible Reading Marathons this week.

Praise God for the great connections made between the 30 or so interns and staffers who attended the “Paint Your Heart Out” fellowship time at our Ministry Center.

Pray for the two new Bible studies to start well and for our many ongoing studies. Pray that many would come who are seeking fellowship and fulfillment in life, a need only our Lord and Savior can meet.

Pray also for the details for the annual Rooftop Prayer event in the U.S. Capitol. We continue to praise the Lord for the prime location He opened up for us!
