Transforming lives with Good News in the Nation’s Capital

The Faith & Liberty Monday Report

Oct 30, 2023

Children in Sunday school may joke that they have memorized the shortest verse in the Bible, “Jesus wept” (John 11:35), but mastering the longest chapter is rather more daunting. Written in the form of an acrostic poem, Psalm 119 celebrates the richness of the Word of God in its 176 verses.

But you don’t have to move beyond the first verse to find advice for life when living is easy and when it’s hard. Encapsulated in just three words in one version is the admonition to “stay on course.”

When the news from near or far is bad, stay on course.

When you need discernment, stay on course.

When confusion reins at work or in the home, stay on course.

When the evil one has you — or your church — in his crosshairs, stay on course.

But how should we do this? We stay on course as we make room in our lives to let God’s Word fill us. From time to time, we must ask ourselves: Do the Scriptures still have this kind of place in my life?

We at Faith & Liberty believe in time in the Word in our personal lives and in our ministry on Capitol Hill. That is why our Bible studies have multiplied to some 25 groups across the District each week and why these studies are bearing spiritual fruit.

Verse 2 of this majestic psalm gives us good reason to meditate on and apply God’s Word to our daily lives: “Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart, who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways!”

Together, let’s be blessed in the Word!

The Faith & Liberty team

You form the backbone of Faith & Liberty because of your prayerful financial support. As we begin to plan and prepare for the Live Nativity in December, please keep our team and the preparations in your prayers. If you would kindly consider an extra gift toward this event, you can do so on our Faith & Liberty website, or call Patty Bills at the Faith & Liberty office at 202-737-1776, and she will gladly assist you. Thank you!

MONDAY RECAP

Peggy Nienaber was asked to assist with Michael W. Smith’s “A Night of Inspiration” concert on Capitol Hill for members of Congress and their staff. It was a good reminder to sing Christian inspirational songs through a week of many votes for the speaker of the house. The concert was held in the Cannon Caucus Room of the U.S. Capitol.

The Faith & Liberty team was in the Capitol to pray with congressional members prior to the final vote for the speaker of the House. Peggy was able to pray with a group of women members of Congress before and during the vote, and as you likely know, Rep. Mike Johnson, who is a conservative Christian, was voted into this important office.

Peggy attended a women’s retreat with 90 women from Capitol Hill. May Patterson was the keynote speaker who shared on “Getting Closer to God — Bring It to the Table.” They enjoyed singing and praying together along with many activities, including making s’mores over a bonfire. Faith & Liberty provided materials at the hospitality table at the retreat for all the women who attended.

Rock Wednesday once again saw a good turnout of congressional members and staffers this past week, and the prayer needs were big! This new, early-morning prayer time is becoming very popular. What a wonderful way to start the workday in the US Capitol — praying together.

Peggy attended the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom — 25th Anniversary event in the Kennedy Caucus Room — last Monday. The event commemorated the 25th anniversary of the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998. Members of Congress spoke at the event focusing on those who are being persecuted for their faith and remembering the ongoing conflict in Israel.
