Transforming lives with Good News in the Nation’s Capital

The Faith & Liberty Monday Report

Feb 20, 2023

One of the most enjoyable aspects of our ministry on Capitol Hill is getting to know the young interns who are being introduced to life in Washington and considering a career in government. They are at that critical stage of life where they are forming the framework of their own beliefs, and some are encountering the Scriptures in our Bible studies for the first time. This weekend, several of them will enter the waters of baptism and profess their faith at a church that has contributed significantly to their spiritual formation.

Of course, the nation’s capital is not the only place where we see God using coming generations. In Kentucky, some national news outlets are following a move of God — a revival — that is being led by university students. This powerful revival is drawing people from across the country to the Asbury University auditorium, which has been filled with prayer, praise and the presence of God for weeks. This is not the first time Asbury has experienced a revival, and it is now spreading to universities in other states, among them Cedarville University in Ohio; Lee University and Belmont University in Tennessee; and Samford University in Alabama.

In the church and in ministry, it seems that more and more, we are seeing younger people step up and lead spiritually, and we welcome them! Like the pillar of fire and the cloud leading Israel through the wilderness, the Holy Spirit is disrupting our to-and-fro busy ministry schedules to remind us what’s really important. Let us follow the lead of these students who seek the Lord first in humility and holiness — and see what God will do in our nation’s capital!

THE MONDAY RECAP

  • The Faith & Liberty team visited congressional staffers last week while the House members were on recess. This one-on-one time not only gives us an opportunity to meet with staffers who need prayer, but also to talk with those who may not yet know the Lord.

  • Peggy Nienaber met with a NASA employee for fellowship and prayer, and was surprised with the opportunity to tour the NASA National Headquarters in Washington, D.C. While NASA is focused on its space missions, the staff member mentioned this does not take their focus off of who should be first in their lives — Jesus Christ.

  • Patty Bills continued to work with church and congressional staff to sign up volunteers and readers for the upcoming D.C. Bible Reading Marathon.

COMING SOON

  • With Congress on recess, our Bible studies are taking a break this week.

  • This week, we are hosting our next Intern Night — Minute to Win It, a time of fellowship, food and fun!

  • As we mentioned above, several of the interns we work with have signed up to be baptized this Sunday. We’re rejoicing with them as they take this public step of faith!

  • Ash Wednesday is this week, starting Lent as we prepare our hearts to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord at Easter. Many churches have opened their doors for services and communion.

  • We are planning together with Seedline International the annual D.C. Bible Reading Marathon, which is scheduled for April 22-26. The Faith & Liberty team is working on scheduling a room in the congressional buildings to make it easier for members of Congress to participate in the reading. You are also invited to sign up now for your slot to read during the marathon.

To stay informed on issues in Washington and play your part as a citizen and a Christian look for the Faith & Liberty emails throughout the week. We are in this fight together to defend and preserve those values and principles we all cherish.

PRAYER

Pray that hunger and thirst for God would continue to grow among the young people in our nation’s capital, in universities and across the country. May spiritually strong leaders rise up from among them!

Pray for those who are participating in our Bible studies, including our new Congressional Women’s Bible Study. Pray for focused discussions that lead many to faith and grounding in the gospel.

Pray that the leaders of our nation will fear the Lord, which is the beginning of wisdom.

Pray that Faith & Liberty will be a light for Christ on Capitol Hill and that God would expand our ministry for His glory.
