Transforming lives with Good News in the Nation’s Capital

The Faith & Liberty Monday Report

Jan 30, 2023

One of the most interesting accounts in the book of Acts comes in chapter 2 when the apostle Paul meets King Agrippa in all of Roman royalty’s pomp and circumstance. Paul, the prisoner, knows he has a unique, God-given opportunity, so after giving Agrippa, the king, due respect, he gets right to the heart. He tells the king why he is on trial, then asks a crucial question: “Why would any of you consider it incredible that God raises the dead?”

Paul goes on to share his personal encounter with the Lord Jesus on the Damascus Road when his name, “Saul,” was changed to “Paul.” His name change wasn’t just window dressing. His identity changed too. Once a persecutor of Christians, Paul chose to join them. Because of his own radical transformation, Paul knows it’s possible for someone like Agrippa to become a believer. Paul doesn't hold back in his witness, and Agrippa asks: “Can you persuade me in such a short time to become a Christian?”

Paul’s fellow Jews had tried to kill him, but he declares, “I have had God’s help to this day, and I stand here to testify to small and great alike” (Acts 26:22). Paul was bold to speak to power in this way, and we also must take these opportunities when God opens the way. Will you pray with us, that we would be prepared for these kinds of powerful, Spirit-led moments?

THE MONDAY RECAP

  • We are thankful that over 100 women who serve as interns or congressional staffers attended dinners on Capitol Hill for a time of fellowship, prayer and connecting.

  • The “Learn” Bible study series continues. This past week, they addressed the most important question of all: “Who is God?”
  • Former Mongolian President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj spoke at our Ministry Center during a special luncheon. After the fall of the Soviet Union, Mongolia was looking for ways to open to the Free World. The Hon. Elbegdorj discussed his fight for human rights, religious freedom, democracy and the value of America for the world. He emphasized the importance of American values and U.S. global leadership. We were privileged to host this champion of freedom at this special event.

  • Our team is working together regarding our 2023 focus and putting into place the necessary details for planning and executing all kinds of events this year.
  • After jumpstarting the new year, we have continued our Bible studies and weekly fellowship gatherings. We hosted a “Do’s and Don'ts” of working on Capitol Hill for new congressional interns and staffers. Over 25 new congressional interns and staffers stopped by to learn about Washington, D.C., and it was a great time to connect with them.

COMING SOON

  • The congressional interns will get together to see The Chosen finale for Season 3 on the big screen this week.
  • The National Gathering for Prayer & Repentance will be held in Washington, D.C. this Wednesday, February 1. Jonathan Alexander will open this morning event with songs of praise. There will be public reading of the Scriptures and prayers crying out for mercy on our nation. Faith & Liberty’s staff will be in attendance.
  • The annual National Prayer Breakfast will be held Thursday, Feb. 2.
  • We’ll have our second Congressional Women’s Bible Study this coming week. We started the series in the Gospel of Mark and will continue through this book as we enjoy fellowship together.
  • Senate Chaplain Barry C. Black is starting his Bible study this week now that Congress is back after the Christmas break. We support this study by attending and referring people who work on the Hill to attend.

To stay informed on issues in Washington and play your part as a citizen and a Christian look for the Faith & Liberty emails throughout the week. We are in this fight together to defend and preserve those values and principles we all cherish.

PRAYER

Pray that our Congressional Women’s Bible Study will continue to draw members of Congress who are seeking wisdom from the Word and have a desire to know and experience God in their personal and professional lives.

Pray for the two national prayer breakfasts happening this week, that our leaders — in politics and other spheres — will give rightful place to prayer and the Scriptures and give glory to God.

Pray with us that the congressional interns, especially those who don’t know the Lord, will find watching The Chosen a moving experience this week.

Pray for the Jan. 31-Feb. 1 International Religious Freedom Summit, that people around the world who are being persecuted will benefit from this gathering. Peggy Nienaber is serving on this year’s IRF steering committee.

Pray for good health and stamina for the Faith & Liberty team, and that we will continually keep in step with the Spirit in all we do. Pray that God would open up opportunities for us to be a light on Capitol Hill.
