Twelve Republicans joined 50 Democrats in the U.S. Senate and passed the motion to proceed on the so-called "Respect for Marriage Act," clearing the 60-vote threshold for cloture and paving the way for a simple majority vote on final passage.
This unconstitutional bill fails to provide protection for people or organizations with sincerely held religious beliefs about biblical marriage and could exacerbate attacks on religious liberty.
Mat Staver shares his thoughts on the future despite this vote. Here are five takeaways:
- We will never give up on something that is so true and obvious as marriage between a man and a woman.
- We will never give up on God's created design that He created male and female uniquely and complementary.
- It doesn't matter what courts, legislatures or voters say. They do not define marriage, God does.
- We stand on the side of objective truth, on the side of millenia of human history.
- Stay engaged, we are. We will continue to fight in the courts, legislatures, and public education, setting forth a message of truth.
