Let the Sentinels Slumber Not!

Nov 11, 2019

Although incorrectly attributed to Thomas Jefferson, the Price of Liberty still remains an eternal vigilance on the part of those who enjoy the benefits of Freedom.

According to the Jefferson Library at Monticello, a May 2, 1833 edition of the Virginia Free Press and Farmer’s Repository stated, “Someone has justly remarked that ‘eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.’ Let the sentinels on the watch-tower sleep not, and slumber not.”

On this Veteran’s Day, as your missionaries to Capitol Hill, we are grateful for the brave men and women in our various branches of military service who serve as our ‘sentinels on the watchtower.’ As we daily enjoy the ‘blessings of liberty’ we do so with an acute awareness that our guardians of freedom ‘sleep not, and slumber not.’

To that we say a heartfelt, “Thank you!”

On Capitol Hill, we regularly interact with members of the military and each time we do so, it is with deep appreciation for the sacrifices they make to keep us free. Many of us have family members, whether husbands or wives, sons or daughters, or brothers or sisters who either have served or are currently serving in the Armed Services. We know firsthand the challenges they and their families face, particularly when they are deployed to defend our liberties in such faraway places as Iraq, Afghanistan, or Syria.

At Faith & Liberty we pray every day for those in the military. And today, on this Veteran’s Day, 2019, we invite you to pray with us for the men and women of our Armed Forces. Take a moment and join us in this prayer taken from DaySpring:

“Dear Lord,

Our hearts are filled with gratitude for the men and women who serve our country now and in the past, and for the sacrifices their families make so that we can all enjoy the blessing of freedom. We praise you for calling them to help protect us, and for giving them the courage and ability to do their jobs well.

Guide their choices and their actions, Lord. Help them to see you working in their daily lives, whether in the field, at home, or abroad. Surround them with your mighty angels; protect them in your mercy; cover them with your grace.

Guard their hearts while they are far from loved ones and bless them with moments to cherish when they are together. Hold these families close, Lord. May they look to You for the strength and peace that only You can give.

In Jesus Name we pray,

Amen."

In addition to your prayers, we ask you to take a moment right now and make an investment in Faith & Liberty. As your missionary team to Washington, DC, your generous gifts help us bring the Word of God to bear on the hearts and minds of our nation’s public policy makers – including those serving in the Pentagon.

It is your prayerful and faithful support that enables us to reach out to our military leaders, including our chaplains who face increasing pressures to compromise their calling and faith. In fact, this week, we are meeting with the leadership of the organization to which a large majority of our evangelical military chaplains belong.

Thank you for your prayers and for your generosity. And a very special thank you on this Veteran’s Day to all who sacrificially serve our nation in all of the branches of the US Military!

God Bless You All!
